The first step to becoming a staff member, is of course, becoming a member on a site. If you've been a member on a site for a long time, or have joined a brand new site, you have a better chance at becoming staff.
You have to have confidence in your role playing. If you can write 300+ word posts, you definitely have a chance. Your posts also need to be good. Writing long posts does not mean you're good. You have to remember that. It's awesome if you can write 500 word posts. I can't even do that most of the time. But quality is 100% of the time more important than quantity.
Be active. No one wants a staff member who isn't active. They have too much power to be lazy. You have to log in at least every three or four days, and you have to post once a week if you can. Be active, and be well known.
Make connections. A staff member that no one knows won't be respected. Make friends with the staff, talk to the other members. Make sure everyone likes you.
Talk to an admin. Don't just wait around to be promoted. If they're having staff tryouts, give it your all. Try out. If they aren't, talk to the main admin. Let them know that you love the site and you have ideas for it that could promote it further. Show them that you are active and would be good for a staff position.
If they deny you, then just wait until they have more tryouts, or until the site gets super busy and they have no choice but to pick the most active member to be staff.
